2xx Success

HTTP 206 Partial Content

The server sends one or more parts of the resource, the byte ranges the client asked for in a Range header, instead of the whole thing. It is how downloads resume and how video and audio players jump to the middle of a file.

Defined in RFC 9110, section 15.3.7(opens in a new tab)

Default settings

Up

Up. By default an Uptimecheck HTTP monitor accepts 200–399 as up, so a 206 counts as up. With a keyword check, the page must also contain the word you set.

Up

Up: the checker counts any answer below 500 as the site answering.

Why you see 206 and what to do

Typical causes

  • Video and audio players seeking, download managers resuming, PDF viewers loading pages.

If you run the site

  • If downloads can’t resume or videos can’t seek, check that the server sends Accept-Ranges: bytes and that no proxy or compression step drops range support.

If you’re a visitor

  • Nothing to do.

Know the moment your site stops answering as it should

An Uptimecheck monitor requests your page as often as every minute, checks the status code against the ones you expect, confirms a failure with a second check and then alerts you.
