4xx Client error

HTTP 414 URI Too Long

The request URL is longer than the server is willing to interpret.

Defined in RFC 9110, section 15.5.15(opens in a new tab)

Is 414 up or down for a monitor?

Uptimecheck HTTP monitor

Default settings

Down

Down. It is outside the default 200–399 range, so a monitor reports an outage once a second check confirms it. If 414 is the answer you expect from that URL, add it to the monitor’s expected status codes.

Up

Up. The checker counts any answer below 500 as the site answering: a 414 comes from a server that is running.

Why you see 414 and what to do

Typical causes

  • A form that sends lots of data with GET instead of POST.
  • A redirect loop that adds to the query string each time.
  • Tracking parameters piling up on a URL.

If you run the site

  • Send large data with POST in the body, and look for redirects that keep appending parameters.

If you’re a visitor

  • Remove the part of the URL after the question mark and try again.

Know the moment your site stops answering as it should

An Uptimecheck monitor requests your page as often as every minute, checks the status code against the ones you expect, confirms a failure with a second check and then alerts you.
