How to monitor domain and SSL expiry

An expired domain takes the site and mail offline; an expired certificate puts a browser warning in front of every visitor. Both are easy to prevent with a reminder well ahead of time.

Add the domain

1. Open Domain names and choose Create domain name.
2. Give it a name and enter the domain name.
3. Under Domain name expiration notifications, tick the handlers and choose when to be told: 1, 2, 3, 7 or 14 days, or 1 or 2 months before.
4. Under Advanced settings, set SSL expiration notifications the same way. Change the SSL port if the certificate is served on a port other than 443.
5. Choose Create.

Tips

• Choose a month or more for domains: renewals can need a card update or a transfer code.
• Certificates from Let’s Encrypt renew about 30 days before expiry. A reminder 14 days ahead means automatic renewal has already failed once.
• Add every hostname that has its own certificate, such as shop.example.com and api.example.com.
