How to create and use an API key

The REST API (Professional and Business) covers monitors, maintenance windows and status updates, documented at app.uptimecheck.com/docs/api. An MCP server lets AI assistants do the same with an API key.

Create a key

  1. Open Settings in the sidebar and choose the API tab.
  2. Choose New API key.
  3. Name the key after where it is used, such as “Deploy script”, and pick Read & write or Read only.
  4. Choose Create key and copy it. This is the only time the key is shown.

Only owners and admins can manage API keys. Revoke a key on the same tab; requests with it stop working right away.

Use it

Send the key as a bearer token in the Authorization header:

curl https://app.uptimecheck.com/api/v1/monitors \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer uc_your_api_key"

A read-only key can list monitors, checks, incidents and status pages. A read and write key can also create, change, pause and delete monitors.

AI assistants

The same tab has Connect an AI assistant (MCP), with ready-made setup for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code. Ask “is everything up?” or “pause the shop while I deploy”. See how to connect an AI assistant.

Treat the key like a password: keep it out of code repositories and front-end code. More on the REST API.
