Open and resolve PagerDuty incidents

A confirmed outage opens a PagerDuty incident and the recovery resolves it, so your PagerDuty schedules and escalation policies take it from there.

What you get

  • Triggers and resolves

Each outage opens one PagerDuty incident, tied to the Uptimecheck incident, and the recovery resolves that same one. An incident closed by a maintenance window, a paused or a deleted monitor is resolved too.

  • Severity that fits

Outages are sent as critical; slow responses, expiry reminders, DNS changes and other warnings as warning.

  • Context in the incident

The summary, the monitored address as source, the monitor as component, the cause, where it was confirmed and a link to open it in Uptimecheck.

  • Grouped warnings

Slow alerts open and resolve one incident per monitor, and certificate and domain reminders are grouped per monitor and expiry date instead of paging again for each reminder.

How to connect PagerDuty

  1. In PagerDuty, open Services, your service, Integrations, Add integration and pick Events API v2. Copy the integration key.

  2. Open Alert channels in the sidebar and choose Add channel.

  3. Pick PagerDuty and paste the 32-character key into Integration key.

  4. Choose Add channel, then Send test. The test opens and resolves an incident right away.

Included on every plan, from Start to Business.

What arrives

  • Outages, once a second check confirms them
  • Recoveries, with how long the monitor was down
  • Slow responses, and when they are fast again
  • TLS certificate and domain expiry reminders
  • DNS record changes and server restarts
  • New broken links, mixed content and page speed drops
  • New problems with a domain’s email setup
  • A test alert whenever you choose Send test

The events Uptimecheck sends: a trigger when the outage is confirmed, a resolve with the same key when it recovers.

Questions

Does Uptimecheck resolve the PagerDuty incident by itself?

Yes. The recovery resolves the incident the outage opened. So does a maintenance window that starts, or a monitor that is paused or deleted while the incident is open.

Does acknowledging in PagerDuty acknowledge the incident in Uptimecheck?

No. Acknowledgements in PagerDuty stay in PagerDuty. Acknowledge in Uptimecheck, or with the button in Slack, to cancel Uptimecheck’s own escalation alerts.

Can PagerDuty be a later escalation step?

Yes. Set When to alert on the PagerDuty channel to wait 5 to 60 minutes. It is then only triggered if the outage is still going and nobody has acknowledged the incident.

Which PagerDuty integration do I pick?

Events API v2 on the PagerDuty service that should be paged. Its integration key has 32 characters.

What if an alert can’t be delivered?

Uptimecheck retries a failed alert five times over about 40 minutes, and stops at once when the service says the address is gone for good. The channel then shows Not delivering with the reason, on the alert channels page and on the monitors that use it. A passing Send test clears it.

Is it included on every plan?

Yes. Every alert channel is on every plan, from Start to Business; SMS uses credits (included on Professional and Business, bought packs on Start). Plans differ in how many alert channels you can add: 25 on Start, 75 on Professional and 250 on Business.
